Breast Augmentation (Implants)

Today women have a choice of two different types of breast implants. One option is Saline implants.  Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water.  They can be filled with varying amounts of saline which can affect the shape, firmness and feel of the breast.

The other option is Silicone implants . Silicone implants are filled with an elastic gel.  The gel feels and moves much like natural breast tissue.

Implants (whether they are saline or silicone) may need to be replaced or revised. It's important to know that your breast implants are not permanent and may require replacement during ones lifetime. You should expect to have future visits with your plastic surgeon to discuss changes in breasts.

While Dr. Kleinman was training in Baylor, Texas, he worked with one of the creators of the breast implant.  25 years later, Dr. Kleinman is offering both saline and silicone implants to his patients.

I have a few questions. I am looking to add fullness to my current size and was wondering what is the recovery period like? How long does it take for the new breast to reach their final destination, I have seen pictures post op and they are really high and separated. What are the most common risks in doing this type of surgery?

Thanks Celeste for inquirying about breast implants.

Recovery from breast implant surgery is easy.  Most people get back to their normal activities within one week.

Dr. Kleinman generally recommends to hold off with heavy exercise for at least 2 week.

It can take up any where from 6months to a year (depending how stretchy your skin is) to see the final results. Breast implants sometimes appear high when first placed under the muscle, but over time gravity does eventually pulls them down.

Hope this helps, please feel free to send more questions.

Best regards,

Noela

Are the new silicone implants safe?

Posted by Arlene on Wednesday, May 07, 2008 at 6:37 PM

Noela

Arlene, thanks for asking that question.

The FDA recent made silicone breast implants available again.  Apparently, there was never any truly scientific objective data presented that supported the FDA initial reaction to take them off the market.

The pros and cons of both the saline and the silicone implants should be discussed with your plastic surgeon.  We always recommend that you seek the advise of a board certified plastic surgeon who will take the time to discuss your individual concerns.

Hope this helps,

Best regards,

Noela
