Dr. Andrew Kleinman, President of the New York State Society of Plastic Surgeons, has reassuring news about breast implants. Today, a panel of experts convened by the FDA reaffirmed that silicone and saline implants are inherently safe and concluded that patients don’t actually need regular MRIs to check for implant ruptures. Panelist Dr. William Maisel, deputy director for science and chief scientist for the Center for Devices and Radiological Health, told reporters that, “There was consensus among the panel that the requirements for ongoing M.R.I.’s should be removed” because the risk associated with ruptured implants is low.
Dr. Andrew Kleinman, who worked with Frank Gerow, the creator of breast implants, is not surprised by the panel’s findings. “The panel’s conclusions come on the heels of an FDA review of new data on the safety of breast implants,” Dr. Kleinman explains. “Not only does FDA data show that breast implants are safe, it also shows that implants are not linked to breast cancer, reproductive problems or connective tissue disorders.”
Of course, as plastic surgeons have always known, breast implants are not without potential risk of complication. However, in the hands of a competent, board-certified plastic surgeon, these complications are easily addressed. “Although these latest findings don’t come as any real surprise,” says Dr. Kleinman, “women contemplating breast augmentation or reconstruction can rest assured that the previous concerns about implants have been put to rest. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast augmentation has been the most popular plastic surgery procedure since 2006. Given this recent data, I fully expect it to remain so. ”
