Also referred to as lipoplasty and suction lipectomy, liposuction is a plastic surgery procedure which removes undesirable fat from specific areas in order to sculpt the body. Liposuction is commonly used on areas of fat that have proven diet- and exercise-resistant such as the upper arms, abdomen, waist, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, chin, cheeks, and neck. Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures performed today.
As a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Andrew Kleinman has acquired extensive experience in liposuction. He is happy to work with you to develop an individualized treatment plan to help you best achieve your desired look. As with most types of surgery, those considering liposuction should be in good health and have realistic expectations for the outcome.
Your liposuction procedure may be performed with either local anesthesia or with general anesthesia. Anywhere from one to five hours may be needed to complete the procedure depending on the amount of fat being removed. During the procedure, a tiny incision is inconspicuously made in the treatment area and a cannula, or small tube, is placed through the incision to break up and remove the fat. There are several different variations on the traditional form of liposuction including tumescent liposuction, the super-wet technique and ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL). Tumescent liposuction and the super-wet technique both involve the injection of a fluid containing lidocaine and epinephrine which eases the removal of fat. UAL applies ultrasound energy which also eases fat removal by first liquefying the fat.
Recovery after liposuction may involve some temporary bruising and swelling, though these side effects are typically minimized with the newer techniques. Some soreness and discomfort may also occur which can be countered with medication. A compression garment similar to a girdle may need to be worn for several weeks. Drainage tubes, if used, are typically removed within a few days. Most liposuction patients are able to return to work and their usual routine within one to two weeks.
