Male breast reduction is a plastic surgery procedure which can reduce an enlarged male breast. This little-discussed condition is known as gynecomastia and affects as many as 40% to 60% of men. Surgery can help by improving contour and creating a flatter and firmer chest.

While there is often no known cause for gynecomastia, the condition has been linked to some potential causes including impaired liver function and the use of steroids, marijuana and alcohol.

Your male breast reduction surgery may be performed with general anesthesia or with local anesthesia and sedation. An average of one to one-and-a-half hours is typically needed to complete the surgery. Incisions are inconspicuously placed on the edge of the areola or in the underarm area, allowing the resulting scars to be well concealed. Major reductions may require larger incisions while smaller reductions involving just the removal of excess fatty tissue may involve a very small incision and the use of liposuction alone. Once the incisions are made, excess fat and/or glandular tissue are removed from the breasts. In extreme cases, excess skin may be removed as well.

Recovery after male breast reduction will involve some bruising and swelling. Most swelling will subside within several weeks. In addition, some discomfort may result, particularly during the first few days, which can be countered with medication. Patients are typically required to wear a compression garment for one to two weeks after the procedure. Most male breast reduction patients are usually back to work within a day or two.
