Your tummy tuck surgery may be performed with general anesthesia or with a combination of local anesthesia and sedation. An average of two to three hours is typically needed to complete the surgery, though more extensive cases can take as much as five hours. The incision is located just above the pubic area and runs between the hipbones. A second incision may be necessary in order to release the navel from the surrounding tissue. Once the incisions are made, the muscles of the abdominal wall are tightened and excess fat and skin are removed.

Recovery after the tummy tuck will involve some bruising and swelling that can last anywhere from several weeks to months. Some discomfort and soreness can be expected, particularly during the first few days, and this can be countered with medication. Patients will be required to wear a support garment for a period of time. Surface stitches are typically removed within five to seven days and deeper sutures within two to three weeks. Patients should be aware that the tummy will leave a significant scar, though it will fade with time and is typically low enough to be easily covered by a bikini. Most abdominoplasty patients are back to work and their usual routine within two to four weeks.

Patients with fat deposits limited to the area below the navel may be candidates for a partial abdominoplasty, or mini tummy tuck. This is a less extensive procedure that takes just an hour or two to complete and involves a shorter incision and no second incision around the navel.
